No Access. No Java. No ODBC. No Windows. The database opens in this browser tab.

Read an Access database without Microsoft Access

A colleague or customer sent an .mdb or .accdb file. You need to see what is in it, without tracking down a copy of Access. Here it takes three steps:

  1. 1Drop the .mdb or .accdb file in.
  2. 2Browse its tables and relationships, then use SQL when the answer spans or filters tables.
  3. 3Export that result as CSV or JSON.

What it can do, and where it stops

See which Access tables belong together

When the answer crosses tables, open the Diagram tab first. Select a table and follow its declared relationships before narrowing the data or exporting a result.

What you can inspect in an Access database

The viewer reads table data and makes the file's structure visible:

Access objectIn the viewer
TablesRow counts and browsable data; Access system tables stay hidden.
ColumnsAccess types preserved: text, number, currency, date/time, yes/no, AutoNumber and OLE.
ValuesCurrency and Decimal stay exact; Date/Time sorts in time order.
RelationshipsAn ER diagram of the relationships the file declares.
Saved SELECT queriesShown as SQL for reference, not run in the viewer.
Linked tablesNamed, but their remote rows are not loaded.
Forms, reports, macros and VBANot shown.

Nothing leaves the tab

The file is opened from your disk and read where it sits, so there is no upload and no copy on a server. Queries are read-only, which means the file you opened is the file you still have, and closing the tab leaves nothing behind.

Common questions

Does the database or its password leave my computer?

No. The whole file is read into this browser tab's memory and queried there, and a password you type is used in the tab to decrypt the file and is not stored or sent anywhere. Closing the tab discards both.

Which Access versions does it open?

Access 97 through Access 2024 and Microsoft 365: .mdb files from the Jet 3 and Jet 4 engines, and .accdb files from ACE. A file that is not an Access database, or is damaged, is reported as such rather than shown empty.

Can it open a password-protected database?

Yes. An .accdb file encrypted with a password in Access 2007 or later asks for it in the page, and a wrong password is refused with a message so you can try again. An Access 2000-2003 database password does not encrypt the file, so such an .mdb opens without asking.

How large a database can it open?

There is no fixed limit: the file and a typed copy of every table are held in the tab's memory, so the machine sets the ceiling, and files over 1 GB get a warning. Every table and result pages to its last row; an export writes the first 10,000 rows free and the whole result with PRO.

Can I edit the database?

No. The viewer runs SELECT and WITH queries only and never writes to the .mdb or .accdb file, so the file you opened is unchanged. To take the data elsewhere, export a result as CSV, JSON or Parquet.

Access file in Google Drive?

Open it without downloading: right-click the .mdb or .accdb file in Drive and choose Open with → MDB and ACCDB Viewer. Your browser reads the file straight from Drive; it never passes through our servers.

Prefer to keep an .mdb or .accdb file in your editor?

The browser is for a quick answer. Install the local viewer in your editor to keep working with the file beside your code.
